QQI L3 Health & Safety Awareness

Purpose

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to recognise and maintain good health and safety practices in a familiar supervised environment

Access to course
To access programmes leading to this award the learner should have reached the standards of knowledge, skill and competence associated with the preceding level of the National Framework of Qualifications. This may have been achieved through a formal qualification or through relevant life and work experience.

English Language Proficiency
This course is delivered and assessed in English and is suited to learners with moderate English language proficiency to ensure that all learner engagements and assessments can be completed

Upon Completion of this course, learners will be able to:

- Describe the basic principles underpinning health and safety, to include the concepts of prevention of risks and protection against hazards 
- Describe health and safety related issues in a familiar work or learning environment in the context of the tools, equipment and associated documentation
- Define both employer and employee responsibilities for a familiar work or learning environment with regard to health and safety and accident prevention by referring to appropriate health and safety legislation for Ireland
- Identify existing and potential health hazards and safety hazards in a familiar work or learning to environment including who could be affected by the hazard
- Group hazards by type, including physical, electrical, mechanical, chemical, psychological, and work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs)
- Give examples of ergonomic risks in a familiar work or learning environment
- Demonstrate the correct method of using a fire blanket and firefighting equipment
- Participate in a fire drill following procedures correctly
- Describe the procedures to be taken following an accident, including completion of the appropriate documentation and knowledge of roles and responsibilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of personal and workplace health, safety and hygiene by following good health, safety and hygiene practices in the work or learning environment.


Assessment
Participants must attend two full days and successfully complete Portfolio / Collection of Work  through continuous assessment

Grading
'Successful' indicates that the learner has achieved all of the learning outcomes for the award with some supervision and direction. The learner has demonstrated autonomy of action and has taken responsibility for generating appropriate evidence for all learning outcomes.

Certification
QQI L3 Health & Safety Awareness Certificate (no expiration) & a Safetech Manual Handling Certificate (valid for 3 years)
