From the 1st June 2003, all workers must have FÁS Construction Skills Card (CSCS).
The job of a slinger/signaller requires skill and concentration as they play a vital role in the lifting team. As with all those using work equipment they must be trained and competent. They must know and understand both the regulatory requirements of their job and the operational requirements of the lifting operation. These will be covered in the safe system of work as produced by the Appointed Person for every lifting operation.
The duties of a slinger/signaller include:
The slinger/signaller may also act as the Crane Supervisor on simple lifts if he is competent and has been instructed to do so by the Appointed Person.
In the UK it is widely accepted that slinger/signallers working on construction sites will be trained to CPCS standards. For new operators this will mean undertaking a 4 day training course which covers:
Trainee slinger/signallers will receive a red CPCS card and logbook when they have successfully completed the achievement test at the end of the course. They will then receive specific and appropriate training in their depots. They should continue to operate under the direct supervision of another competent slinger/signaller until the employer can be sure that they can work safely and competently on their own.
A two day Experienced Worker Assessed Route of Entry is available for the CPCS Slinger/Signaller category.
