Abrasive Wheels

This is a half-day course is designed to provide the course participants with the appropriate knowledge of the hazards and dangers of working with Abrasive Wheels. It also provides the participants with the expertise required to mount an abrasive wheel.

Objectives

On completion of this course the participants will be able to:

  • List the legal requirements of working with Abrasive Wheels
  • Select the appropriate wheel or cutting disc for the job
  • Correctly mount and use an abrasive wheel
  • Understand the function of the abrasive wheel equipment (fixed or portable)

Course Content

  • Discuss the Abrasive Wheels Regulations 1982
  • Identify the hazards of working with abrasive wheels
  • Evaluate the causes of abrasive wheels accidents
  • Define the methods of selecting the correct wheel for the job
  • Functions of the components, flanges, blotters etc
  • Inspection and test of the abrasive wheel Guarding of the grinding /cutting machines
  • Differences between grinding and cutting operations
  • Dressing and truing the wheel
  • Method of Training The course takes place in a classroom situation with practical demonstrations using bench grinders and angle grinders. Where time allows a visit to the workshop will take place. Videos, overheads and flipchart discussions are used throughout the course. Training records and evaluation forms are also used.
